Отдельная «непобедимая» история получилась с проблемной вредной привычкой многих пользователей постоянно держать открытыми огромное количество вкладок одновременно.
Самое очаровательное, что они при этом искренне удивляются чудовищно медленной работе браузера и всего компьютера.
Пишу про расширения OneTab и Tab Wrangler, а у меня спрашивают, как сделать вкладки в несколько строк… нет слов просто.
Обидно, что в этой секте свидетелей пятидесяти вкладок моя любимая жена — председатель правления!
Но не буду очередной раз пытаться сегодня перетянуть «отступников» в свою «истинную веру 6-7 открытых одновременно вкладок» — кажется, догадался о причине слабой популярности предыдущих решений для спасения обозревателя сети Интернет от вкладочной напасти.
The Great Suspender Chrome extension
This Chrome extension is very powerful and can bring back your computer’s valuable resources that were being consumed by opened tabs. You might leave a tab open when you plan to come back. It is more convenient then bookmarking and closing the tab because you need the link only for a short duration.
The Great Suspender is meant for exactly these scenarios. It can automatically suspend some tabs that have not been used for a given amount of time. Suspended tabs are not closed completely but are in a state where they consume minimum resources.
The extension itself is quite simple to use. Once installed, you can navigate to its options page and adjust a few settings. The first and the most important setting is the time period to suspend. If you quickly switch tabs, keeping a shorter period can help. Else you can go for something bigger such as one hour or so.
Automatically suspend tabs on Google Chrome
If a tab is not used for this much amount of time, it will automatically be suspended. Once the tab has been suspended, you can reload it or simply click on the large blue area. A simple refresh of the page can re-activate the tab and bring it back from the suspension state.
The Great Suspended also supports the creation of whitelists. You can whitelist any number of websites so that tabs which have these websites opened are never suspended. This is very helpful for websites/web pages that require to be opened in the background.
Prevent Chrome browser crashes
The extension is intelligent enough that it will never dismiss or suspend tabs that have unsaved input. For example, you were filling up a form on the website, but then you wandered off to do something else. All inputs will be preserved, and the tab will never be suspended. Similarly, you can also enable a setting where the extension will not suspend any tab playing audio or media. So you can still listen to music in a background tab.
If you have thin internet connectivity, then you would not like to suspend tabs at all. The Great Suspender also comes with an option which will never suspend tabs if the internet is not available. Other than that there is a similar option if you are running your device on battery.
The extension also gives you a few options in session management. Under the session management tab, you can see the active and suspended session. You can also export or save these suspended sessions, and they will show up under saved sessions later on.
Keyboard shortcuts for most of the operations such as suspend and unsuspend can be configured as well. The program comes with one set of default shortcuts, but you can easily remap them to something else.
The Great Suspender is one useful extension for Google Chrome. As soon as you start using it, you will notice a considerable decrease in system resources consumed by Google Chrome. This is a must-have extension for all Chrome users. It is customizable and can be configured to a good extent.

Как мне кажется, все дело в том, что вкладки трансформировались в списки ссылок, прятались под кнопку или в одну вкладку и ЗАКРЫВАЛИСЬ после этого — вот суть проблемы.

Нужно было открывать эти списки, заново вникать в них, выискивать нужную ссылку и только снова запустив сайт во вкладке переходить к поглащению информации — вот, что не нравилось пользователям.
Расширение The Great Suspender тоже выгружает вкладки из оперативной памяти через выставленное время (усыпляет их или замораживает — кому как больше нравится), но при этом оно их НЕ ЗАКРЫВАЕТ.
Не меняется их размер и заголовок (лишь немного мутнеет), не нужно открывать какие-то списки или тыкать на кнопочки — все десятки одновременно открытых вкладок «обязательно нужных для работы» на месте.
Просто кликаете по ним и страницы перед Вами — логика и алгоритм действий с телодвижениями остались совершенно прежними.
Вот оно — гениальное решение для спасения оперативной памяти от прожорливых вкладок. Миллионы установок (в сумме всех популярных браузеров) расширения The Great Suspender подтверждают это.
Не буду мучить еще и вычислением количества оперативки, которую можно высвободить таким образом (точной цифры ни у кого нет — большая зависимость от «тяжести» запущенных сайтов).
Могу только сказать, что не менее 30% памяти освободится с The Great Suspender, как пишут на различных форумах. Невооруженным взглядом будет заметно ускорение работы браузера, это точно.
Давайте уже перейдем к скачиванию, установке и легкой настройке воистину волшебного расширения.
Настройка The Great Suspender
Процесс установки расширения не должен вызвать проблем — он стандартный.
Просто переходите по официальной ссылке (дал выше) в магазин Chrome из своего браузера и инсталлируете «морозилку вкладок»…
Уже установил и «обкатал» его на Google Chrome и на новом Microsoft Edge — работает великолепно. Скриншоты (что это такое) настроек уже сделаю из Яндекс.Браузера, пожалуй…
Ну, раз можем, значит настроим…
Тут все ясно и без лишних слов. Порадовал шаг выбора времени задержки перед заморозкой вкладки…
Удобные и подходящие варианты. Спускаемся ползунком прокрутки ниже и настраиваем еще немного пунктов под себя…
Рекомендую установить галочку в первой строке и обязательно во второй (забыл ее установить перед съемкой экрана).
Если активировали встроенный механизм экономии памяти, то в самой нижней строке, что на скриншоте выше, ставить галку категорически не нужно (будет работать только вторая строка (лучше, говорят) ИЛИ последняя).
Остальные пункты (строки) — на свое усмотрение. Можете, как видите, изменить тему оформления «замерзшей страницы» и определиться с ее снимком…
Если совсем без него, то спящая страница перед активацией будет выглядеть таким скучным образом…
А вот так, со снимком…
Согласитесь, второй симпатичнее и информативнее.
Единственное — рекомендую делать снимок только верхней части страницы и не использовать «более высокое качество скриншотов страницы».
Просто эти фишки создадут лишнюю нагрузку на процессор и память, а мы как-раз добиваемся их оптимизации, если не забыли еще.
Кстати, если в браузере работает функция предпросмотра вкладок (их превью во всплывающих при наведении окошках), то вообще почти не заметите визуально работы расширения The Great Suspender.
Лично мне остальные разделы настроек были совершенно бесполезны…
Даже «горячие клавиши» показались тут не очень нужными…
Можно легко управиться с деликатными моментами и через меню значка расширения на любой странице в сети Интернет…
Кстати, именно тут и живет вход в его настройки.
Building from source
There are two options
- Use npm as described in the original README and rename zip/crx into xpi
- Use or do the same manually
NOTE: to install an unsigned xpi you should use Developer or custom build of Firefox with disabled extension signing enforcement. It may also work on some GNU/Linux distros. Search for it yourself if required.
The rest of README file carried from the original project without change. However do not submit bug reports about this project to original author’s repository.
The Great Suspender
«The Great Suspender» is a free and open-source Google Chrome extension for people who find that chrome is consuming too much system resource or suffer from frequent chrome crashing. Once installed and enabled, this extension will automatically suspend tabs that have not been used for a while, freeing up memory and cpu that the tab was consuming.

Install as an extension from source
- Download the latest available version and unarchive to your preferred location (whichever suits you).
- Using Google Chrome browser, navigate to chrome://extensions/ and enable «Developer mode» in the upper right corner.
- Click on the Load unpacked extension... button.
- Browse to the src directory of the unarchived folder and confirm.
If you have completed the above steps, the «welcome» page will open indicating successful installation of the extension.
Be sure to unsuspend all suspended tabs before removing any other version of the extension or they will disappear forever!
